6th Grade Instrument Selections!
Please review all of the instruments below and choose both your favorite instrument as well as a back up choice. Some instruments are very popular and will get filled up. Once you have selected your favorite 2 instruments, please fill out the Google Doc below. Please let me know if you have any questions! I can be reached at [email protected].
Flute
Flute is the smallest instrument in band, and therefore the easiest to carry. It most often plays melody parts in the band. Flute is an instrument where you would like to have a lot of them in a concert band.

Alto Saxophone
There are many different types of saxophones in band, but due to most 6th graders small size everyone starts on the Alto Saxophone. Saxophones are heavier to carrier, and the largest of the woodwinds. You don't typically want too many of them in a concert band. Saxophones are vital to the Jazz Band. Because of the saxophone's popularity, they are limited to 10.

French Horn
French Horn is a medium sized instrument, but can be awkward to carry. It is a difficult instrument to play, and I would only recommend if you have played piano, or another instrument beforehand. Being able to sing and match pitch can also be helpful. We usually want about 4 French Horns in a concert band. It's really good if you and a close friend chose this together!

Trombone
Trombones look large, but they are actually very light because of so few moving parts. You normally want a lot of Trombones in a band class, especially because you need many Trombones for Jazz Band and Marching Band. I love the trombone because it's so much fun! I tried to get my son to play trombone when he joined band! (He chose sax...I don't know what happened...)

Baritone/Euphonium
A Euphonium looks like a small Tuba. It plays in the same range as the Trombone, but uses valves instead of a slide to change the note. They are quite large. You would likely have one instrument at home, and use a different one at school. You usually want about 4 of these in a Concert Band. If I had to start over and choose an instrument, this is the one I would choose!

Percussion
Percussionists will learn both Mallets and Snare (on a beginner practice Pad) at Henley. Percussionist must be dedicated musicians because they have 2 instruments to practice! Students will spend an equal time on each instrument and it may require more practice time each week than some of the other instruments. Percussion is a popular choice and will be limited to 8 students.
